The history of Eau de Cologne is a fascinating journey through the centuries, combining art, science and commerce. This fragrant water, originally named "Aqua Mirabilis" or "admirable water", has its origins in the eponymous German town in the early 18th century. The aromatic herbs added to the preparation were sometimes associated with medicinal properties, and the whole was often presented as a remedy for various ailments, such as headaches, indigestion or even infectious diseases. Over time, understanding of the health risks associated with alcohol consumption and increased regulation led to the exclusive use of Eau de Cologne as an external fragrance, to be sprayed on the skin for its refreshing aromatic properties.
