Eau de Cologne jasmine

When it comes to fragrance families, it's impossible not to mention the emblematic Eau de Cologne, a timeless creation that gave birth to an entire olfactory genre. Dating back more than three centuries, the first Eau de Cologne, composed mainly of citrus extracts, offered an olfactory experience unrivalled at the time. Today, many renowned perfume houses continue to perpetuate this tradition with modern interpretations of the classic Eau de Cologne with fruity Cologne notes, for example, also known as « Fresh Water ». Throughout history and right up to the present day, Eaux de Cologne have been enriched to include floral Cologne formulations, more specifically delicate jasmine fragrances.

Native to northern India, acclimatized to the Mediterranean basin in ancient times, and now cultivated mainly in India and Egypt, this small white flower is a plant raw material particularly prized by perfumers. Two jasmines are grown for perfumery: sambac jasmine and grandiflorum. Both are climbers, and the shrubs with their refined jasmine fragrance form balls over a metre in diameter. The little fragrant stars are picked at night or dawn, and quickly treated with a volatile solvent, usually hexane, to obtain a concrete with a delicate jasmine bouquet, which is then washed and iced with ethanol, before filtration and evaporation. This produces a jasmine absolute; there is no essential oil for this very delicate flower. Its fragrance is incomparable, and jasmine is sometimes used in gastronomy too, giving it a term borrowed from the food industry, such as: delicate jasmine aroma, elegant jasmine aroma, spring jasmine aroma, subtle jasmine aroma.

Although jasmine flowers are still picked by hand, a picker harvests an average of 3kg of flowers a day, bearing in mind that it takes at least 4 million (over half a ton) to produce a small kilogram of absolute. Cologne jasmine creations, or jasmine-scented creations in general, can incorporate jasmine flower essences, i.e. jasmine absolutes, as natural ingredients in their formulation. Synthetic molecules can also be used, such as hedione, jasmonal, benzyl benzoate and benzyl acetate, to create fresh jasmine accords, the basis of a jasmine floral fragrance, a pleasant jasmine scent or a refined jasmine scent.
